Life History of the Late Phebby Malama

Phebby was born on 20 April 1950 in Luanshya. She was the sixth of eleven children born to the late Mr. Timeyo Fyalo Malama and Mrs. Elisa Mumba Malama. 

She started her lower primary school at Roan Antelope primary school, in Luanshya, and did her upper primary school at St Mary’s school in Kabwe.  Phebby proceeded to Dominican Convent secondary school in Kabwe where she spent a year, and then moved to Mpatamato Secondary School in Luanshya where she completed her secondary school.

After completing her secondary education, Phebby went to Evelyn Hone College in Lusaka, where she studied Pitman’s Secretarial course for one year. After completing her secretarial course, Phebby got a job at the University of Zambia (UNZA) main campus in Lusaka. Later during her employment with UNZA, she was sponsored to undertake a year of advanced course in Secretarial studies in Nairobi, Kenya.

Upon her return from Nairobi, Phebby was transferred from the main campus to University Teaching Hospital, department of Obstetrics and gynecology as a personal secretary to the head of obstetrics and gynecology. Phebby left the UNZA, after a few years, she joined Mining Timbers in Kitwe, where she worked as an executive secretary for 3 years.

Phebby was married to Patrick Katyoka. Their first-born daughter Mulenga was born in Lusaka. Phebby and Patrick moved to Kalamazoo Michigan, were their second daughter Mwandu was born. In 1979, while pregnant with her third child, Phebby moved back to Zambia with Mulenga and Mwandu, giving birth to her last-born son, Emmanuel. Back in Zambia, Phebby joined the Zambia State Insurance Corporation, where she worked for many years until she retired on medical grounds in 1991. During that time, Phebby suffered an aneurysm, which left the Right eye permanently blind in.

Throughout her professional career, Phebby was an ardent Christian and active member of Women’s Aglow Fellowship, an International and intercultural trans denominational organization of Christian women. In 1990, Phebby Went into full time Christian Ministry, serving as a secretary at Campus Crusade for Christ for 2 years, before moving to Kabwe General hospital, where she served as a Christian minister of the Gospel, preaching, and providing care to the sick, under the office of the Chaplain. 

in 1997, Phebby Moved back to Lusaka, where she continued to live until 2005 when She moved to the United States of America to live with her second born daughter Mwandu.

Phebby has fought a lengthy battle with cancer. She was first diagnosed with malignant breast cancer in 2012, this later metastasized into malignant neoplasm of the brain. she answered the Lords call on 2nd May 2022. She is survived by two grown up children, Mwandu and Emmanuel, 6 grandchildren; Elijah, Gabriel, Blessed, Ruth, Seth, and Talia.

Phebby was a remarkable human being who will be missed by family, friends, and the Worldwide Christian community. She was Known for her love of people, her warmth and gentle demeanor. She was a woman of prayer, who loved to share her faith and was always ready to share her wisdom over a meal. Phebby loved to cook and in her spare time was an accomplished Seamstress. She loved to read and enjoyed chocolate.

We will all remember her for her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ and her sense of humor.
