Stephen Wilson Gossett Obituary

Stephen Wilson Gossett, 39, of St. Louis, MO passed away on February 26, 2022 in Chicago, IL.

Stephen was born in St. Louis, MO to Jerry and Geralyn (nee Pawlowicz) Gossett on March 7, 1982. The baby of the family, he was affectionately known as “Little Bit”.  As a small child, he and his two brothers invented creative household games, such as Messed Up Boat, Round & Round, and Mr. Mouth & Ralph.  He grew up playing roller hockey and the piano, cheering on the Blues and the Cardinals, and reading about, writing about, and listening to music.

He graduated from St. Pius High School in 2000, and moved to Boston to study Film at Emerson College, then finished his degree at Webster University in St. Louis in 2005. The following year, he moved to Chicago to pursue a career in Journalism. There, he met Rachel Miller amongst the stacks at the bookstore where they both worked. They flirted in the romance section for 2 years, until Stephen finally told her that he did not want to be her friend. They were married on April 19, 2014, semi-legally in front of the lily pond at the Lincoln Park Conservatory in Chicago, IL. They surrounded themselves with good friends and filled their home with bikes, books and senior dogs.

Stephen was a gifted writer and editor. He wrote about local news and events, pop culture, and finally technology and design for Built In Chicago.  He loved his work and was completely dedicated to it, which showed in each piece he published. He took great pride in his parallel parking skills, his word puzzle prowess, and his superior trivia knowledge. He never appeared on Jeopardy, but he would have run at least one category, if he had. He was the most intelligent man his wife has ever known, and he was a friend to every child and dog he ever met.

Stephen is survived by his wife, Rachel Mary Miller; Mother, Geralyn Marian (nee Pawlowicz) Gossett; Father, Jerry Wayne Gossett; Brothers, Timothy Tobias (Mayumi) and Nicholas Wayne (Rachel) Gossett; Nieces, Emi and Mei Gossett.

Funeral services will be held at St. John the Beloved Disciple Catholic Church in Imperial, MO on March 19, 2022, 10am visitation followed by Mass at 11am. There will be a memorial from 12PM until 2PM on March 27, 2022 at Archie’s Tavern in Chicago, IL. A memorial will also take place from 12pm until 3pm on April 3, 2022 at Fern Hill Golf Club in Detroit, MI. The love Steve left in the world is too big for a single service, in a single city. He will be celebrated in each of the cities he loved.
